History of Indian National Football Team

 

The India national football team is Controlled by All India Football Federation. Now Indian teams are struggling in world stage but once it was considered to be one of the best team in the Asia. During the decade of 1950-1960 India was the best team in the Asia.

 

India won the gold medal during the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games under the coaching of Syed Abdul Rahim. India also qualified for the semi-finals in the 1956 Melbourne summer Olympics under the coaching of Sayed Abdul Rahim.

EARLY HISTORY:

The all India football federation was started in 1937 during the period of British Raj in India. British are the first who introduce football in India during the period of 1888 by the name of Durand Cup. And this the worlds 3rd oldest league after FA Cup and Scotish cup. India plays their first match as an independent nation in 1948 against France but lost by 2-1.

Period of 1950-1960 was the golden period of Indian team as they qualified for the 1950 FIFA World cup for the first time in history. India also won the gold medal during the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games and qualified for the Summer Olympics 1956.

The decade of 1950-1960 was the best period of Indian team but the next decade was stating of downfall. In 1960 Asia cup India came last in the group stage and fails to qualify. In 1966 Asia cup India also fails to flourish as the team could not go beyond the group stage as the team finished third.

 

Once Again in 1974 Asia Cup India came last in the group stage and fails to qualify. India just scores 2 goals while conceding 14 goals in the first round.

In 1984 India just qualifies for the Asian Cup but finishes last in the group stage of the first round. But India always was a good team in Asian game as they again won the gold medal in 1987.

 

Period of 2000-2010 was the period of rebirth of the Indian football team under the captainship of Suni Chetri India won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008.

India again never qualifies for the World Cup after the Golden Period. Even not reaching the same heights since their golden era India team is improving as Indian players are playing in Laliga, one of the biggest Football league in the world. Introduction of ISL also helping in the rise of the Indian team, as  Legends like Luis Fio and Roberto Carlos are the big part of this.
